The monument itself is by Wolfgang and Heron who pride themselves on how their work fits in with the landscape. I do love the way it sits at the end of a row of trees in such an unassuming, dignified manner. This is not only a monument to the past as the fight against fascism still rages on. See http://www.hopenothate.org.uk/manchester/ for further information about the struggle.

Tree of Remembrance
This is a sculpture I've walked past many, many times before without stopping to look at what it signifies. It is on the edge of Piccadilly Gardens and is somewhat obscured by the wall around the area. This makes it very easy to miss which is such a shame considering it's importance. It commemorates Manchester's civilian war dead during World War Two. How many other monuments pay tribute to these people?
